Nation of Steel: The Making of Modern America 1865-1925
This book is about how people create technologies, and how technologies shape the world. Accurately explaining, wisely understanding, and carefully managing the dynamics of technology and social change are among the most urgent tasks that await us as citizens of a technological age. This study proceeds over roughly a half century and across most of the United States, with sideways glances across the Atlantic. It describes activities employing a million or more workers. It portrays inventors at work, engineers wrestling to get those inventions to work better, and workmen laying rails, puddling iron, and rolling steel sheets.
