Western Frame
The Western Frame (or Platform Frame) is a development of the Balloon Frame construction method, a construction method where many small members are tied together to form a strong and rigid structure. In Balloon Frame, the studs extended the entire height of the building from sill plate to rafter. In response to lumber limitations and fire spread issues, the Western Frame reduces the length of the studs to span a single storey. Further refinements include a smaller sill plate (nominal 2x6), and the use of a continuous header joist to create a rigid sill platform. This platform, including the subfloor, was constructed first and served as a staging area for the construction of the walls. The model includes floor, wall, siding and roof finishes as well as double-hung windows that were typical for the era.
