Heavy Timber Framing (less than 25ft)
This structure depends on heavy wooden posts and beams that are dry fit together. The carpenter connects timbers by notching, by mortise and tenon joints, or with wooden pegs. The building rests on a stone foundation; sill plates are halved at the ends and pinned together with corner posts. To carry the weight of the roof at a span less than 25ft, a collar beam is used to link a pair of rafters 8’ or 9’ above the attic floor. Lath and plaster is used as the interior finish.
