18" English Bond Solid Brick Wall

For roof spans of up to 35’ this construction type relies on a stepped footing of brick placed 5’ into the ground. The stepped footing tapers inwards on each course a distance of 2” on each side of the wall. Alternating heading and stretching bonds at each course are held in place by mortar joints no greater than ½” thick and make up a total wall thickness of 18”. A distinguishing feature of this construction is the use of a king post truss system normally found in heavy timber construction.
