Balloon Frame
The Balloon Frame construction method is characterised by many small structural elements that act together to provide a strong and rigid structure. There are many variations of the Balloon Frame method; however they all have light timber studs that span the entire height of the building, and intermediate storey framing that is suspended from these studs. Unlike some earlier Balloon Frame methods (born from Heavy Timber progenitor), this model has no joinery details used, instead relying entirely on nails for mechanical connections.
The sill is a 3”x8” plate, which support the structure above. Toenailed to the sill are 2”x4” studs, 16” on centre. To these studs, the 2”x9” joists are nailed. The roof is framed with simple rafters. This model also includes typical interior and exterior finishes for the era, including lathe and plaster and clapboard siding.
