Ashton United Church
Ashton United Church, built in 1899, is located in Ashton, Ontario situated 40 km southwest of Ottawa. Ashton was founded by the Irish settlers of 1818 who fought during the War of 1812. The town was named after the birthplace of John Sumners in England who was the owner of a general store and later a post office established in 1820s. The Ashton United Church congregation was formed as the result of the amalgamation of Ashton Methodist Church and Melville Presbyterian Church in 1925.
In 1868, the first structure of the parish of the Ashton Methodist Church was built on a property east of the present Dwyer Road near the village of Ashton. A few years later the church was relocated to Ashton (exact date is unknown) and a new church building was constructed. Opening in 1899, the new Ashton United Church structure was built in Queen Anne Revival style of architecture featuring brick veneer cladding in common bond with stained glass windows. Structural framing was built up from light frame timber. Sliding doors separates part of the choir to facilitate Sunday school activities. The altar is located at the corner of the choir which is a feature unique to this church.
In years 1936 and 1978, the building went through a number of repairs. The roof was replaced and the shape of the church steeple was altered. In 1984, an addition was built at the back to house a kitchen, a pump room and washrooms in the basement, as well as a fellowship room on the main floor.
