RAIC x CIMS: From Point Cloud to Existing Conditions BIM with Revit
On November 17-19, 2019, Carleton Immersive Media Studio (CIMS) will open its doors to the first time to a continuing education group, providing rare access to the lab, high-tech tools, and experts. Join us at 3-day continuing education workshop: RAIC x CIMS: From Point Cloud to Existing Conditions BIM with Revit.
Since 2010, Carleton Immersive Media Studio (CIMS) has been researching the application of building information modelling for heritage conservation. At that time, the implementation of BIM for heritage conservation was novel. Now, our portfolio of projects ranges in scale from one-room prairie churches to national (Parliament Hill) and world heritage sites (Rideau Canal).
Over the last nine years, we have developed detailed workflows for modelling from geo-referenced metric data that provide accurate and project-specific levels of detail and information for stated BIM use cases. We monitor and communicate the accuracy of our models by including verification parameters – allowing for model users to determine the accuracy of model components easily.
Our intimate knowledge of digitization and BIM for the representation and management of existing built assets puts us in a unique position to contribute to the education of professionals in the digital heritage sector of the architecture, engineering, construction and operations industry. In November, we will partner with the Royal Architecture Institute of Canada (RAIC) to offer a continuing education workshop on developing a heritage building information model from point cloud data.
The hands-on Revit workshop is designed for architects, engineers, construction and project managers, contractors, and conservation professionals. Over the three days, participants will be introduced to new tools used in the documentation and modelling of heritage and existing conditions providing them with a more in-depth understanding of the process and giving them a competitive edge in the growing field of architectural conservation. The course will run from November 15-17, 2019.
Participants will have access to a four-hour pre-learning e-learning course covering the fundamentals of HBIM before participating in the three-day hands-on workshop at the CIMS lab at Carleton University in Canada’s Capital, Ottawa. After completion, participants will have the opportunity to receive feedback and support in an online post-assessment. In addition to the guidance at the CIMS lab, the three-day workshop will include a visit to a heritage building for a demonstration of terrestrial laser scanning. Those who attended will leave with a better understanding of proper workflows for creating BIM in Revit using point cloud data.
Participants should have a basic understanding of BIM and working knowledge of Revit.
