Continuing the Conservation: RAIC and CIMS launch new heritage conservation continuing education workshop series

The Royal Architectural Institute of Canada (RAIC) is the leading voice for excellence in the built environment in Canada, demonstrating how design enhances the quality of life while addressing important issues of society through responsible architecture. The RAIC is a member-based, not-for-profit organization that supports the profession through advocacy, education, and awards, among other resources and initiatives.

In 2018, the RAIC joined the CIMS-led, Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) funded New Paradigm / New Tools for Architectural Heritage in Canada international partnership grant and training program for interns. Through this partnership, the RAIC had the opportunity to host two undergraduate interns in the summer of 2018. During their internship, the interns conducted research into the current state of heritage conservation-based continuing education programs for architects in Canada. They also created, distributed, and analyzed a RAIC member survey, in addition to conducting key stakeholder interviews, to better understand where the gaps may lie between current opportunities in heritage education and the needs of the professional community. The research originated in response to member-expressed interest in reviving the 2006 RAIC course ‘Past Perfect 101’ on The Standards and Guidelines for the Conservation of Historic Places in Canada. For as Canada’s architectural fabric ages, there is a growing need for excellence not only in new builds but also in the treatment of historically-valuable buildings and places. To respond to both this need for more heritage-educated or -inclined architects, as well as the results of the data analyzed from the member survey, the RAIC decided to move forward in developing a suite of continuing education sessions on heritage conservation.

The three streams initially noted of greatest value to be addressed include:

• The Standards and Guidelines • Adaptive Reuse • Emerging Technologies

This led to the opportunity for a third summer intern to join the RAIC in summer 2019 to assist in facilitate a series of workshops on the intersection of digital tools and heritage conservation, including a multi-day workshop and online pre-learning course, in partnership with CIMS.

The first workshop in the series will be held on July 19-21, 2019 at the CIMS lab in Ottawa, Canada. This opportunity will allow participants access to CIMS’ state-of-the-art resources, internationally-recognized experts, and exclusive on-site access.

RAIC x CIMS: From Point Cloud to Existing Conditions BIM with Revit will help participants better understand the complex and unique challenges in managing a BIM project for heritage and existing conditions, including managing large and diverse datasets, file size, and selecting the appropriate level of detail and model tolerance for your project. The course will include a tour of a designated heritage building with a demonstration of capturing point cloud data with terrestrial laser scanners. Participants will learn hands-on, step-by-step techniques for modeling basic building elements to point cloud data including walls, slabs, windows, and ceilings.

The workshop also includes a 4-hour pre-learning e-module, designed to ensure participants have a foundational knowledge to be applied during the in-person workshop experiences.

Registration closes June 15, 2019. Limited spots are available. Twenty continuing education learning credits will be award to each participant.
