CIMS is Open for Doors Open Ottawa!

Get ready Ottawa, Carleton Immersive Media Studio (CIMS) will be participating in this year’s Doors Open Ottawa! On Saturday, June 1, 2019, from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm, come and see what CIMS has been up to recently.

Doors Open Ottawa is an annual free event celebrating the city’s built heritage through providing access to more than 130 unique buildings. The Canada Council Art Bank, the Diefenbunker, Shopify, and the Lemieux Island Water Purification Plant are among the many locations that are available for exploration in addition to CIMS! The history, culture, architecture, and unique office spaces in the city make for a great day of learning new and fascinating facts about Ottawa and the work that happens within it.

CIMS is one of three locations available on the Carleton University Campus. The Discovery Centre on the fourth floor of the MacOdrum Library provides a collaborative workspace for student research with a wide range of state of the art digital technologies – such as gaming platforms and multi-media systems. CKCU FM, located in the University Centre, is Canada’s oldest campus community radio station, providing constant student organized broadcasting. CIMS, situated in the Visualization and Simulation Building near the Colonel By entrance of campus, will join in representing the resources, services, and research available on the Carleton University campus.

CIMS will showcase recent work on documentation, building information modelling, digitally assisted fabrication, large scale urban models, and digitally assisted storytelling. Join us on Saturday, June 1st and learn about the documentation of the Parliament Hill National Historic Site through laser scanning and photogrammetry. See how we use metric data to develop detailed building information models (BIM) at the scale of a building and expanded to represent a whole city. Witness how a 6-axis robot has aided in the fabrication of wood and stone carvings during the rehabilitation project of the West Block and Centre Block. Learn about how technology is used for simulation in the Sustain and Digital Campus Innovation projects. Zoom out to see how Eastern Ontario can be represented from micro to macro. Take hold of augmented reality and see how its use could be applied for the dissemination of the rehabilitation project. Try on a virtual reality headset to watch 360 experiences of the Parliament Buildings, and take a tour of the Senate of Canada and the Canadian High Arctic Research Station through virtual tours.

Join us in the incredible space we have nicknamed ‘the big room’ where we gather for lab meetings, social gatherings, and public lectures. Our undergraduate and graduate researchers will be awaiting your arrival and are excited to show you the exciting work we have been doing. We look forward to seeing you Saturday, June 1st, between 10:00 am and 4:00 pm. You can find us off of Parking Lot 1 on Library Road. The doors to ‘the big room’ will be open directly off the parking lot.
