CIMS Summer Update

This summer at CIMS, our goal is to share our knowledge, workflows, and insights. As an academic research centre, part of our mandate is to engage in traditional knowledge sharing activities such as intern training, journals, papers, and conferences. However, this summer we aim to reach a wider audience through popular, easily accessible venues such as our website and social media.

We’re going to dive into our four streams of inquiry: digitization, modelling, digitally assisted fabrication, and digitally assisted storytelling. We'll also share the common challenges we’ve encountered, novel workflows to mitigate those challenges, and simple tips and tricks we’ve learnt along the way. Essentially, revealing some of CIMS’ magic.

So, this is how it’s going to shake out. Each month this summer will be dedicated to one of the four streams. “But what are these four streams?” you might ask, and to answer your question, a brief definition of the four streams of research by our director, Dr. Stephen Fai (rumour has it these were conceived on a cocktail napkin on a red eye flight to Europe).

Digitization
The transformation of a place or thing into data.

Modelling The creation of a scalable representation of a place or thing.

Digitally Assisted Fabrication The integration of digital technologies into a traditional handcraft.

Digitally Assisted Storytelling The application of digital technologies in constructing and telling a story.

We have two goals for our social media content this summer:

The first is to demystify our work and research and create a library of baseline content housed on our website that can be read, referenced, and understood in the future by anyone interested in what we do, and how we do it.

The second is to pass along some of our knowledge gained through our research to anyone else working or interested in our four streams of inquiry. We want to share this knowledge in the hopes that people working with digitization, modelling, digitally assisted fabrication, and digitally assisted storytelling can learn things from our projects.

All in all, it’s going to be a summer of knowledge sharing, and we can’t wait to get started.
